Open-source licences

Built on open source

Widow9 OS is built on Linux Mint, which is built on Ubuntu. Almost everything in it is free and open-source software, written by thousands of people and shared under licences such as the GNU General Public License (GPL), LGPL, MIT, BSD, Apache and Mozilla Public License.

Each program keeps its own licence. On any Widow9 PC you can read the exact licence for every installed package in /usr/share/doc/<package name>/copyright.

Widow9's own parts

  • Widow9 scripts and packages (the security setup, Welcome screen, edition switch, gauge, theme scripts and build scripts): GNU General Public License v3.0.
  • Widow9 artwork (the 3D widow, wallpapers, icons, logos and boot splash): © Mampi Technologies Ltd. Free to use as part of Widow9 OS. Please don't reuse it in other products without asking.
  • Fonts on this site and in Widow9: Inter and JetBrains Mono, both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
  • Tracker blocklist: HaGeZi DNS Blocklists, GPL-3.0.

Getting the source code

The source code for the Ubuntu and Linux Mint packages in Widow9 is published by those projects in their package archives. The source for Widow9's own packages is published alongside each release.

For at least three years after we distribute each Widow9 release, we will also give anyone a copy of the complete corresponding source code for the GPL-licensed software in it, for no more than the cost of providing it. Email support@mampitech.com with "Widow9 source request" and the version you have.
